Hi Wellfit team!

Today is my last day at IBM, and I would be remise not to share my gratitude and appreciation for the Wellfit program that has had such a positive impact on my time here since y'all spun it up. I have always been one of those "almost committers" in the world of fitness- knowing its value, wanting to build life long habits rather than fad classes that fade, and knowing I needed to lose a little weight and tone up for my own health- but have never been able to make it stick until Wellfit. The obvious ease of location and price made my stubborn personality say "I can't not do it!" and I'm so thankful. You even turned me into an early riser! While I want to thank you all for dreaming up, creating, organizing, subsidizing, and maintaining this program, the real praise I want to communicate here is to Tiffany (who I hope I properly cc-ed here, I didn't actually have her email!) She has been my trainer since the very start of the program in April, and I knew pretty instantly that her coaching style would be pivotal in my success and happiness (and therefore keep me waking up and showing up and pushing harder). She has just the right balance of encouragement, motivation, understanding, and snark (well, more acceptance of the group's snark). She is a phenomenal listener and educator who makes everyone in the gym feel welcome and at home in her training world. Because of her, I feel healthier and more in control of my body and life. I know I am not the only one who feels this way, as she has developed a cadre of super fan morning athletes, but I want to make sure she gets the praise and affirmation she so rightly deserves. I can only hope I can find another Tiffany out there in the future!

I really appreciate how hard David pushes me both in boot camp and in PT. Not only does he know that I can push myself harder, but he is always thinking about what my goals are and he doesn't accept anything less than 110% from me. In terms of PT specifically, he has crafted a program around my goals that is very focused on strength (which I LOVE). He's included exercises that are both familiar and brand new to me and does a great job of walking me through form and making corrections as needed. He's also an extremely attentive trainer and makes sure to check-in with me about how I'm feeling physically before and after every workout (PT and boot camp). If there's ever a situation where I'm in pain or have extra tightness somewhere, he makes the necessary modifications to the workout or exercise. It's obvious that he has a vast knowledge about fitness and I appreciate how he uses that to test my limits and help maximize my progress.

Thank you so much for all of the work that you and the team do to put on these programs for IBM. You guys have not only helped me find consistency with exercise again, but have helped to rekindle my genuine love of it. I can't wait to get down to the gym every day and I am so pumped by the progress that I've ben seeing and continue to see. You guys are legit the BEST!

Since this was assessment day, and I think I missed all the prior ones, let me put my own spin on results and goals. I think I started back in May, with the goal building cardio and some strength for an event called the death ride in July. Also concurrently build strength for downhill mountain biking. Last year I broke my hip very badly and it’s a long recovery, i could barely ride a bike on a flat road.

But I set my goals and milestones, and made time for all the necessary therapy, just walking took 3months alone. I had heard of HIIT, and figured it would be a great accelerator and more well rounded. The results from the wellfit program have been fantastic and fun/hard with the group. In fact, i decided in addition to death ride, to return to a very challenging mtb race, the downieville downhill cross country. That was this last weekend, 2wks after death ride. 

So, my personal assessments? My fitness at death ride (125mi, 15k climbing), in high heat was fantastic. Downieville is a completely different animal, technical sketchy rocky descents, difficult long climbs; and I hadn’t raced in nearly 2 decades. Still have more work there, but had confidence to jump straight back into expert class.

So yeah, I would give the program A+, but highly recommend taking a longer view than a single month, it’s a journey and it pays off big. I’m looking to more results, and confident they will come. 

Thanks to all the well-fit crew! So glad IBM got connected up with you. Oh yeah, I have lost weight and waist size, while gaining that strength. Win-win.

I am very happy to tell you that Tiffani Dorman is the perfect personal trainer for me!  Our 12 sessions flew by so quickly.  They were much more enjoyable than I ever imagined and I looked forward to our fun, yet challenging sessions. 

 

Her ability to incorporate both my goals and my concerns into workouts produced results far exceeding my expectations is amazing!  She not only taught me the importance of training my core, but also worked with me on strengthening muscles to better support injury areas and improving my stamina and endurance.  She encouraged me to trust and push myself.

 

Tiffani provides positive reinforcement with her 'you can do it' attitude.  Her enthusiasm is contagious and I truly felt her belief in me, building my confidence by leaps and bounds. I feel stronger and healthier.  I am sleeping better and am very excited about the loss of weight and inches.  I feel so much better in my 'skin' and am wearing clothes that I could not fit into just 2 months ago!

At IBM, We have a new sports ground (cricket as well as Soccer). We have been playing Cricket league since May (Chris Akey played one game though :)), that's when we started Well-Fit training, day by day we have been doing different body workout techniques (sprints, stretching, TRX), I could see that reflection on me in yesterdays game while fielding in ground #gainz. Thanks guys for training us and made our body flexible with increasing our strength."

I just completed Corporate Wellness Group Training program offered by Well-Fit, LLC. 

 

A short 30 days ago, a group of 15 IBMers met for the first time in the onsite gym at noon to begin our journey.  We did not know each other and had each signed up for the class for our own reasons.  Day 1 of the class was all about setting up our “before” numbers and photo.  Our trainers recorded our weight and our waist measurements.  We lined up along mats to see how long we could stay in a plank before collapsing and our up time was recorded.  We did as many pushups as we could in 60 seconds, even though it had been years since most of us had done one and our number was recorded. 

We were introduced to fancy new cardio machines, and learned about the Sprint 8 program on the treadmills.  The idea is to run as fast as you can for 30 seconds, then active rest (walking) for two minutes, then repeat.  We learned what a “sweat score” was.  Foam rolling techniques were demonstrated by our trainers, Tiffani and Jose.  We tried hard to imitate them.  Seven specific warm-up stretches were done, in the same sequence, led by our trainers, readying us for our workout.  Machines designed to work specific muscle groups were demonstrated, including adjustments for weight resistance and for the size of the individual.  TRX bands were worked in a variety of ways, with modifications demonstrated to accommodate injury or other pre-existing conditions.  The next training session shifted to a conference room, where Shaun presented a Nutrition 101 class, covering basic education on calories, fats, protein, carbs, hydration and how to sensibly reach our weight goals while staying healthy.  We were encouraged to keep a food journal for two weeks, just to get a sense of what (and when) we were actually eating, becoming aware of when we were truly hungry.

All of this during Week 1 of the program – the foam rolling demo, the tour through all of the weight and cardio machines, the nutrition pitch - served to ready us for continuing our own success after the 30 day program.  Injury prevention was prioritized during the training sessions.  Soon enough, my routine shifted from eating lunch at noon to going to the gym instead.  I began to look forward to the new routine, even though it was a bit out of my comfort zone.  I had to remember to bring gym clothes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.  I blocked time on my work calendar to accommodate the hour long training sessions.  I had to decide each day to set this hour aside from my work day; that I’d not be available for meetings.  I had to get over the discomfort I felt after a hard workout, when the soreness set in, and decide again and again that the goals I set for myself were worthy of being accomplished. 

It turned out well.

After 30 days, I can honestly say the Well-Fit program was a success.  I kept a food journal for almost three weeks, and learned that I am probably taking in more calories than I need.  I still need to work on refining my overall diet, but I am aware now that slow steady progress is more likely to allow for my goal to be met and maintained.  While the food journal seemed tedious at times, it did force me to acknowledge just how many calories I was eating every day.  If you have to write it down, is it really worth eating right now?  Maybe not.  I have cut down on the volume of food at a meal, and that has been a shift that I’m trying to be mindful of.  I still enjoy good food and no day is perfect but I am headed in the right direction now.

I now know my way around the new gym equipment, and have stayed injury free throughout the 30 day program.  I posed for my “After” photo, and discovered that I had lost a few pounds.  I can tell I got just a bit stronger.  The upper body exercises that seemed hard in the beginning got easier as the month progressed.  Another unexpected benefit of concentrating on food and exercise during the month was that I noticed an increase in the clarity of my thinking and a sense of mindfulness that I did not experience before taking this journey.

A shout out to our trainers, Tiffani and Jose, for their instruction, encouragement and their willingness to step in to make a needed adjustment to an elbow or knee.  When I needed to lower my shoulders while on the TRX bands, I could count on them to call it out, and do so in a judgment free way.  They gave us the nudge we needed to stay on track, started and ended class on time for 15 busy employees.  It’s clear they love what they do and we all benefitted from their leadership.  It’s good to understand what muscle group is being engaged on a given turf drill, and they demonstrated each exercise with the precision we could only hope to achieve.  And they absolutely set the tone for the class, which was always without judgment and always about helping us to reach out goals.

I am delighted to see significant improvement in all areas after completing the Well-Fit IBM Corporate Wellness Program. I feel stronger, more confident and have less arthritis pain. I live down the street from the Campbell Community Center Track and when my husband and I used to go there for walking exercise we would joke about the people who pay money to have someone tell them what to do. Now that I've experienced how motivating fitness coaching is and I see the results, I'm a believer!

Due to my age, weight and low confidence in my fitness ability, I was really nervous to join. However, your whole staff has done an awesome job helping me overcome my insecurities and I was excited to sign up for a second month. I sincerely hope we continue this program beyond June. As an HR Manager I am delighted to see how happy the employees are and experience the comradery with our group. I personally feel this is one of the best benefits IBM has provided to our employees. 

I wanted to let you know that I am grateful for this fitness program. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I was very impressed by the testing results today. I can’t believe I improved so much within a month, especially for push-ups! I thought I wouldn’t be able to beat the number that I did at the beginning of the program, but I managed to double it! Unbelievable! I am very happy about the results and will continue next month! From the moment I first saw the Well-Fit 8-week Challenge program at Cavallo Point, I found it irresistible. As if working out on a beautiful elevated lawn overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge, getting the personal attention from the trainers & having access on weekdays to the gorgeous spa afterwards weren't enough, there was a tantalizing prize for the person who made the most progress over an 8-week period in terms of weight loss, body mass index & several other metrics. So because I won the award for the most-improved participant, my husband & I got to spend one night free at Cavallo Point Lodge, one of the most gorgeous properties in the Bay Area.

 

Giving credit where credit is due, the Well-Fit trainers -- Colin, Deena, Mandy & Ramon -- are quite simply awesome. They're very creative in coming up with a variety of interesting & challenging exercises (see photos on website) & they support everyone in working out at our own pace, whatever our personal fitness level may be. I've also really enjoyed getting to know my fellow work-out enthusiasts. And kudos to Warren Gendel for creating this unique outdoor fitness program.

 

Since the initial Challenge, I've continued to work out several times a week with Well-Fit. In fact, a new 8-week Challenge has just been announced, so I signed up for another round.

 

As a result of working out with Well-Fit, I now have a much better understanding of my physical self & a new appreciation for just how determined I can be. This offering has been everything I ever wanted & more from a fitness program.
